Dyslexia

The College Station ISD policy for early identification, intervention, and support for students at risk for dyslexia or related disorders is through universal screeners for students, parent information, and teacher information starting in K and 1st  grade, and for students in 7th grade that did not pass STAAR Reading.  All other students in grades Pre-K through secondary grade levels are screened through universal screeners.

Students suspected of having dyslexia are identified through a formal evaluation process in College Station ISD. This evaluation may be conducted specifically to determine if a student has dyslexia through an IDEA evaluation.  Evaluators are either Educational Diagnosticians or Licensed Specialists in School Psychology. Following the completion of the evaluation, a written report is generated and reviewed by the ARD committee, Independent educational evaluations for dyslexia will be considered.

All CSISD campuses offer a continuum of services for students with dyslexia. Some students may only require instructional accommodations through Section 504, others may need direct, intensive instruction in reading, and others may require the much more intensive support and services of special education. Because dyslexia ranges from very mild to very severe, it is crucial that individual needs are considered when planning for student success. Those decisions are made through the ARD/504 committee. Students with dyslexia can be served through an Individual Education Plan(IEP) or a Section 504 plan.

CSISD has dyslexia interventionists that provide a highly structured, systematic dyslexia program to our students on a daily basis.   Every elementary and intermediate campus in CSISD has a full-time dyslexia interventionist. Additionally, every middle school and high school has at least one dyslexia interventionist to serve our students who are in need of dyslexia services.  All students that have been identified with dyslexia will be provided information concerning the Bookshare or Learning Ally accessible online libraries.

If you have concerns that your child may have dyslexia, please contact your child's teacher, counselor, or principal to find out more about the Multi-Tiered System of Support( MTSS ), 504, or special education process.
