March 26, 2024–Wellborn Middle School seventh-grader Aarav Sargurunathan won the 2024 Central Texas Spelling Bee held March 23 at McLennon Community College, earning him a spot at Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held May 28-30 in Washington D.C.
Sargurunathan won the regional bee after correctly spelling the word “requiem.”
“The spelling bee is great because it allows you to be a critical thinker by memorizing all the words,” said Sargurunathan. “It’s a really fun experience – I’m super excited for the national competition and I’m proud to represent Wellborn Middle School.”
In addition, Oakwood Intermediate School fifth-grader Maggie Moore placed second out of 33 total competitors.
